A new Northumbria team, designed, manufactured, wired and run by students at every level, from suspension geometry to the business case, over twelve months and one shot at Silverstone.
The Venue
Four days in July. Scrutineering first, because nothing else happens until the car passes it, then the static events and finally the runs that decide the weekend.
The competition
Formula Student, known as Formula SAE outside Europe, is an international engineering competition in which university teams design, build, test and race a single seater car from scratch.
Only 600 of the 1,000 points are won on track. The rest are decided in a room, defending the design, the cost report and the business case to a panel of industry judges. A fast car with a weak case loses to a slower one with a strong one.
The season
Four phases, twelve months, one deadline that does not move.
Setting the targets the whole car is built around. Chassis & suspension fix the layout and geometry, powertrain settles the engine package, aero and brakes & dynamics size their systems, and electrical plans the wiring and sensors. Finance starts the cost report, business writes the plan we pitch at Silverstone, and sponsorship begins bringing our first partners on board.
Drawings become parts. Manufacturing & fabrication build the chassis and machine components, powertrain prepares the engine and cooling, aero builds the bodywork and electrical makes the wiring loom. Finance tracks every part against the cost report, business shapes the pitch that sells the car to the judges, and social media documents it taking shape.
First assembly, then shakedown. Electrical wires up the car and gets data logging running, brakes & dynamics lead the brake and steering checks, powertrain gets the engine running reliably, and every system is tested to find what fails before a scrutineer does. Business rehearses the plan for the judges.
Silverstone. Scrutineering first, then the static events, where business presents the plan and the engineers defend the design. Then acceleration, skid pad, sprint and endurance, with social media capturing every minute of it.
